In 1997, I had a ‘good’ job with a corporation… until my job was
eliminated. While I was out interviewing for other jobs, I was asked
where I saw myself in 5 years… I don’t remember what I said, but
all I could think of was “not here”.
I was tired of always being worried I would be let go or laid off. I
hated interviewing for jobs that bored me, didn’t give me any real
satisfaction, or forced me to play office politics with backstabbing
co-workers then get ‘evaluated’ by clueless managers.
When I dug deep and got really honest with myself, I knew what I wanted
was to run my own event planning company from my home in 5 years. It was
scary to admit that to myself … and even scarier to do something about
it. But I took the leap, quit my job, and started my company 3
months later.
And I have never been sorry. Sure, there were
struggles… Early on there were lots of mistakes and missteps.
The truth is… I had no idea how to start a business, get clients, or how
much was really involved in planning the perfect wedding.
So I read tons of books, attended lots of events to find out more about
running a business, invested in seminars on planning weddings and social
events, and educated myself on marketing strategies and techniques.
I also went to an endless number of networking events, bought
advertising packages, and coaching programs. Some things I did helped my
success; many were awful and big wastes of time and money!
It was hard alone… but I was determined to figure everything
out.
And I did.
Once I had the knowledge I needed, I knew that if I wanted to
really make money, live the lifestyle I wanted -- and have it be easy, I
was going to have to get organized.
Planning a wonderful event means paying attention to details, a lots of
